The Technology Sector Dominated Global IPOs in Q3 2021

The initial public offering (IPO) activity of unicorn companies has become a phenomenon. According to an Ernst & Young report, there were 1,635 global IPO activities in Q3 2021, raising a total of US$330.7 billion.

The technology sector dominated IPO activity, with 419 companies raising US$116.41 billion in fresh funds.

The healthcare sector ranked second with 287 IPOs between January and September 2021, raising US$49.17 billion.

The industrial sector saw 204 IPOs in Q3 2021. The consumer and materials sectors recorded 202 and 193 IPOs respectively.

The energy sector had 104 IPOs, finance 68, and real estate 62. There were also 40 IPOs in the retail sector, 36 in entertainment, and 20 in telecommunications.

Furthermore, the Ernst & Young report stated that global IPO volume increased by 87% year-on-year (YoY) in Q3 2021. The funds raised from these corporate actions increased by 99% YoY.

The main driver of global IPO activity in Q3 2021 was the Europe, Middle East, India, and Africa (EMEIA) region, which saw a 263% YoY surge. Meanwhile, the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions recorded increases of 118% YoY and 35% YoY respectively.
