Central Java's economy, measured by Gross Regional Domestic Product at constant prices (GRDP), reached Rp997.32 trillion in 2021.

This figure represents a 3.32% growth, slightly below the national average of 3.69% in 2021.

However, this signifies an improvement from the previous year. In 2020, Central Java's economy experienced a contraction of 2.65%, coinciding with the initial emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic which impacted the national and global economies.

Although Central Java's economy began to recover in 2021, its growth rate was not as strong as in the pre-pandemic period.

Before the pandemic, the economy of the province, led by Ganjar Pranowo since 2013, achieved positive growth in the range of 5.2%-5.4% per year during the 2014-2019 period. According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, this figure was slightly above the national average.

The fastest-growing economic sectors in Central Java in 2021 were construction (7.37%), followed by information and communication (6.04%), and electricity and gas supply (5.95%).

Conversely, the sectors with the lowest growth were government administration (-0.64%), education (0.07%), and health and social services (0.18%).

From an expenditure perspective, the strongest growth was seen in export expenditure (15.97%) in 2021, followed by import expenditure (15.41%).

The lowest growth in expenditure components was government consumption (0.83%) in 2021.

Other expenditure components with low growth included consumption of non-profit institutions serving households (NPISH) (1.25%) and gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) (6.86%).
