2017 inflation was the highest in the three years of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Vice President Jusuf Kalla's administration. The Central Bureau of Statistics recorded the calendar year (January-December) inflation rate last year at 3.61 percent. This figure is higher than inflation in 2015 and 2016.
The expenditure group for housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel recorded the highest inflation compared to other expenditures throughout 2017, reaching 5.14 percent. This was followed by the transportation, communication, and financial services expenditure group at 4.23 percent; then ready-to-eat food, beverages, cigarettes, and tobacco at 4.1 percent; and the clothing expenditure group at 3.92 percent.
Last year's inflation realization was lower than the target in the 2017 State Budget (APBN) of 4 percent and the revised 2017 APBN of 4.3 percent. Meanwhile, in the 2018 APBN, the government targeted an inflation rate of 3.5 percent with economic growth of 5.4 percent.
