Rice Remains the Biggest Contributor to Inflation until October 2023

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that inflation in October 2023 reached 0.17% (month-to-month/m-to-m). BPS Deputy for Distribution and Service Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, explained that the monthly inflation rate in that period was lower than the previous month, which recorded inflation of 0.19% in September 2023.

Pudji stated that rice was the biggest contributor to inflation in October 2023. This commodity has consistently contributed significantly to inflation in previous months.

"If we look at it, at the commodity level, the biggest month-to-month inflation contributor was rice, with a contribution of 0.06%," said Amalia in an online press conference on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.

Gasoline was the second largest contributor to inflation, with a contribution of 0.04% in October 2023. This was followed by cayenne pepper at 0.03% and airfare at 0.02%.

In addition, Pudji also mentioned several other commodities that contributed 0.01% to inflation last month.

"These include red chilies, gold jewelry, piped water tariffs, oranges, and green mustard," she explained.

Despite this, BPS found that several commodities contributed to deflation in October 2023, namely fresh fish, eggs, broiler chicken, tomatoes, shallots, cooking oil, and garlic.

BPS also noted that of the 90 cities surveyed, 69 cities in Indonesia experienced inflation and 21 others experienced deflation.

The highest national inflation occurred in Tanjung Pandan, Sumatra Island, at 5.43%. Meanwhile, the deepest deflation occurred in Jayapura, Papua, at -1.43%.
