Jakarta, DKI Experienced 0.06% Deflation in September 2021

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Jakarta experienced a 0.06% month-to-month (m-to-m) deflation in September 2021, with a consumer price index (CPI) of 106.59. This is the third deflationary month in Jakarta this year.

Previous deflation in the capital city occurred in June and July 2021. Jakarta recorded a 0.27% (m-to-m) deflation in June 2021, followed by a 0.04% (m-to-m) deflation the following month.

This deflation resulted from price decreases in several expenditure groups. Food, beverages, and tobacco experienced a 0.68% deflation. The transportation group saw a 0.05% deflation.

Furthermore, the information, communication, and financial services group experienced a 0.03% deflation. Recreation, sports, and culture, as well as personal care and other services, saw deflations of 0.02% and 0.01%, respectively.

Conversely, four commodity groups experienced inflation. The group with the highest inflation was clothing and footwear at 0.76%, followed by food and beverage service/restaurants with 0.54% inflation.

Household equipment, appliances, and routine maintenance experienced 0.17% inflation, while the health group saw 0.06% inflation.

Meanwhile, housing, water, electricity, and household fuel, as well as education, experienced neither deflation nor inflation.

BPS also noted that the main contributors to Jakarta's deflation in September 2021 were chicken eggs, chicken meat, gold jewelry, red chilies, and air transportation. The total contribution of these five commodities to deflation reached 0.144%.

Conversely, the largest contributors to inflation in Jakarta last month included rice with side dishes, cooking oil, white cigarettes, papaya, and bananas. The total contribution of these five commodities to inflation reached 0.088%.
