Investment flows to several countries significantly decreased during the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically in 2020. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) states that after this critical year, global foreign direct investment (FDI) gradually recovered.

Data estimates from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), processed by the ADB, show that total FDI inflows increased by 64.3% in 2021. This is in contrast to the 35.0% decrease in 2020.

FDI growth stemmed from large earnings reinvested by those countries. The ADB compiled data on at least 10 of the world's top FDI recipient countries.

The United States ranked first, attracting US$367.4 billion in FDI in 2021.

"Reinvestment of earnings into the country's economy reached US$200 billion—the highest ever recorded," the ADB wrote.

China came in second, receiving US$181 billion in FDI. Hong Kong was third with US$140.7 billion.

Singapore, the only Southeast Asian country in the top 10, ranked fourth with US$99.1 billion in FDI. Canada was fifth with US$59.7 billion.

"Other major FDI recipients in 2021 outside of Asia were Brazil (US$50.4 billion), South Africa (US$40.9 billion), Mexico (US$31.6 billion), and Germany (US$31.3 billion)," the ADB wrote.
