Malang City's 2023 Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current prices reached Rp93.05 trillion. This represents a 6.07% growth compared to the previous year's Rp84.81 trillion.
Compared to the COVID-19 pandemic year of 2020, the region's economic growth is significantly higher. At the end of 2020, post-COVID, growth recorded a decrease of 2.26%.
According to BPS (Statistics Indonesia) publications, with a total population of 874,660, the GRDP per capita in the region is recorded at Rp107.54 million/capita/year. Nationally, this ranks 64th.
Of the 17 sectors driving the region's economy, the wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector is the leading contributor.
The wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector in Malang City is the mainstay, contributing the largest share to the 2023 GRDP with a value of Rp27.38 trillion. This represents a 5.61% growth compared to the previous year's Rp25.05 trillion.
Following this is the manufacturing industry, which grew by 6.07% to Rp25.01 trillion, and the construction sector with a GRDP of Rp11.63 trillion (6.44% growth).
Rounding out the top five contributing sectors is accommodation and food service activities with a GRDP of Rp4.49 trillion. This sector recorded an 8.8% growth compared to the previous year's Rp4.01 trillion.

In terms of distribution, the main sector contributing the largest growth to Malang City's GRDP is wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with a contribution of 30.89%. Other sectors in the top five include manufacturing, construction, education services, and information and communication.
Sectors with the smallest distribution are Corporate Services, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Water Supply, Waste Management, Waste and Recycling, Mining and Quarrying, and Electricity and Gas Supply.
