Israel declared war on the Palestinian militant group, Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah (Hamas), on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
The declaration of war followed Hamas's barrage of rockets into Israeli territory in the early hours of Saturday, October 7, 2023.
Israel responded by bombarding Hamas-controlled areas beginning Sunday night, October 8, 2023. The Times of Israel reported that the Israeli Air Force continued to pound Gaza with airstrikes.
According to Maram Humaid, an Al Jazeera journalist based in Palestine, the Israeli counter-offensive has not stopped.
"Third night of non-stop bombing in Gaza. Me, my baby boy, sister, brother, nieces and nephews, and parents huddled together at home, sleepless in the dark, listening to the sounds of our city being bombed and our people being annihilated," said Maram Humaid, as reported by Al Jazeera on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
To date, there is no definitive data on the size of the military forces of the warring parties.
However, judging by its defense budget, Israel's military strength is considerable in the Middle East, and even on a global scale.
According to data compiled by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), in 2022 the Israeli government spent approximately US$23 billion on military expenditure.
This makes Israel the second-largest military spender in the Middle East and 15th in the world.
In the Middle East, Israel is only surpassed by Saudi Arabia, whose military spending reached US$75 billion in the same period.
On the other hand, Palestine is not recorded as having any military spending at all.
"As a result of Israeli demands for Palestinian demilitarization, the State of Palestine does not possess a formal army, air force, navy, heavy weapons, or sophisticated military equipment," stated Transparency International in its 2020 Government Defence Integrity Index report.
"Although Hamas groups smuggle weapons and missiles through Iran, Syria, and Sudan, this must be distinguished from formal military spending," it continued.
According to Transparency International, the State of Palestine only receives security assistance from international partners, does not have its own Ministry of Defence, let alone facilities for warfare.
