Mount Marapi Erupts Again Tonight (Tuesday, January 13, 2026)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday (13/1/2026) at 19:59 WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi only erupted once.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed reached None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters and a duration of 35 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 13, 2026, from 00:00-23:59 WIB, showed 4 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 0.4-1.8 millimeters and earthquake durations of 65.3-113 seconds.

Subsequently, there were 2 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 0.9-1.5 millimeters s-p 1.9-2.5 seconds and durations of 10.2-10.5 seconds, as well as 5 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.1-9.3 millimeters s-p 11-27 seconds and durations of 75-109 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and hikers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to engage in activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 187 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (105 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 4 times.
