Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Reaches 2,500 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 10:58 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 27 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 2,500 meters above the peak or 4,084 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 29.6 millimeters and a duration of 101 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 15, 2025, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 7 instances of puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-22 millimeters and durations of 47-194 seconds.

Then, 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 4.4 millimeters, s-p 1.2 seconds, and a duration of 13 seconds; and 4 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7.4-22 millimeters, s-p 12-31 seconds, and durations of 41-78 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and in the southwest-north-northeast sector up to 6 kilometers.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,189 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,011 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 180 times.
