Based on the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) population projection from 2010-2035, Indonesia's population in 2010 reached 238.52 million. The number of births reached 5 million, while the number of deaths was 1.52 million. Therefore, Indonesia's population in 2011 increased by approximately 3.4 million to 242 million.
According to the same projection, the birth rate continued to decline, reaching 4.29 million in 2035, as shown in the graph below. Conversely, the death rate showed an upward trend, reaching 2.68 million in 2035. Thus, the dependency ratio also decreased to 47.7% in 2035 from 50.5% in 2010.
Increased public awareness of the Family Planning (KB) program—through delaying marriage age, regulating birth spacing, and limiting the number of children—has led to a declining birth rate year after year. Meanwhile, the death rate has increased, corresponding to the growing number of elderly people passing away. Indonesia's population in the next 17 years is projected to reach 305.7 million.
