Indonesia Remains Among the Top 5 Most Corrupt Countries in ASEAN 2023

Indonesia ranked among the top five most corrupt countries in ASEAN in 2023, according to a Transparency International (TI) report.

The TI report states that Indonesia's Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score was 34 out of 100 in 2023, stagnant since 2022.

The average global CPI score in 2023 was 43 points. This means Indonesia's score is worse than the global standard.

Within ASEAN, this poor performance placed Indonesia as the fourth most corrupt country. This position is not significantly different from 2022, where it ranked fifth with the same score.

Indonesia's position is similar to the Philippines, which was ranked fourth in 2022 with a score of 33 points. The Philippines' score increased to 34 points in 2023.

Myanmar ranked first with a CPI score of only 20 points in 2023, a decrease from 23 points in 2022.

Cambodia was second, with a score of 22 points, down from 24 points in 2022.

Laos ranked third, above Indonesia, with a score of 28 points, a decline from 31 points in 2022.

Overall, there were no significant changes in CPI scores across ASEAN in 2023. Singapore maintained its position as the country with the highest CPI in Southeast Asia, with a score of 83 points, followed by Malaysia with 50 points.

The CPI survey involved 180 countries. A score of 0 indicates widespread corruption, while a score of 100 indicates a country free from corruption.

The average global CPI score was only 43 points in 2023. TI noted that most countries have not experienced significant changes over the past decade.

TI also explained that more than two-thirds of countries scored below 50 points, indicating serious corruption problems. Furthermore, 23 countries experienced their lowest scores this year.
