Data Check: Anies Baswedan States High Number of Mental and Sexual Violence Cases in Indonesia; What is the Situation?

Presidential candidate number one, Anies Baswedan, stated that numerous cases of mental and sexual violence occur in Indonesia.

He made this statement during the fifth Presidential Election debate of 2024, themed Social Welfare, Culture, Education, Information Technology, Health, Employment, Human Resources, and Inclusion, held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on Sunday, February 4th, 2024.

In his presentation, Anies stated that more than 15 million people have been victims. "Mental and sexual violence; more than 15 million people have become victims," he said.

According to data from the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (Kemen-PPPA), 29,883 cases of violence were recorded throughout 2023. Of this number, 13,156 cases were sexual violence, representing the highest category.

Second was physical violence with 10,500 cases, followed by psychological violence with 9,050 cases in third place. Other types of violence recorded in the data include exploitation, trafficking, neglect, and others.

Of all the violence cases, the majority of victims were women, totaling 26,161, while male victims numbered 6,332.
