Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the eldest son of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), has officially been chosen as a prospective vice-presidential candidate (cawapres) to accompany prospective presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, who is supported by the United Indonesia Coalition (KIM).
The selection of the Solo Mayor has raised concerns about political dynasties in society. Gibran's chances of becoming a vice-presidential candidate became increasingly open after the Constitutional Court (MK) decided to add the clause "experienced as a regional head" as a requirement for presidential and vice-presidential candidates in Article 169, letter q, of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections. It is known that the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Anwar Usman, is Jokowi's brother-in-law.
So, how did the public respond to Gibran's selection as a prospective vice-presidential candidate for the 2024 Presidential Election?
A survey by *Kompas* Research and Development shows that a majority, or 60.7%, of respondents stated that Gibran's candidacy in the 2024 Presidential Election is a form of political dynasty.
"Regardless, the discourse on political dynasties is still viewed negatively by the public. Most respondents view political dynasties as tending to prioritize family (political) interests over the interests of the community," wrote *Kompas* Research and Development researcher Yohan Wahyu in his report on Monday (23/10/2023).
Meanwhile, 24.7% of respondents considered Gibran's actions not to be a form of political dynasty. Another 14.6% of respondents stated they did not know.
In addition, *Kompas* Research and Development also recorded a number of public opinions regarding the practice of political dynasties.
53% of respondents stated they disagreed with the practice. Meanwhile, 34.7% of respondents admitted to agreeing with political dynasties, and another 12.3% of respondents answered that they did not know.
This survey was conducted on 512 respondents from 34 provinces in Indonesia. The sample was randomly selected from *Kompas* Research and Development panel respondents according to the proportion of the population in each province.
Data collection was conducted from October 16-18, 2023, using a telephone interview method. The margin of error is approximately 4.35% under conditions of simple random sampling and a 95% confidence level.
