As of June 2021, 123,000 residents of West Sumatra were aged 75 and over.

The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs recorded 383,690 people (6.86%) of the population of West Sumatra (Sumbar) as belonging to the unproductive age group (65 years and older) in June 2021. Of this number, 123,550 people in Sumbar were aged 75 and over.

Furthermore, 90,740 people were aged 70-74 years and 169,410 people were aged 65-69 years. The population of Sumbar in the productive age group (15-64 years) reached 3.78 million (67.57%). There were also 1.41 million people in Ranah Minang who were in the unproductive age group (0-14 years).

The population in the 10-14 year age group was the largest in Sumbar, reaching 531,100 people (9.49%) of the total population. Meanwhile, the population in the 70-74 year age group was the smallest, at only 90,730 people (1.62%).

Based on gender, there were 2.81 million (50.28%) male residents in Sumbar. There were also 2.78 million female residents in the province.

According to marital status, there were 2.77 million (49.49%) unmarried residents in Sumbar and 2.5 million (44.74%) married residents. The remainder, 322,830 people (5.77%), were divorced.
