Yogyakarta City Has the Highest Human Development Index in Indonesia

Yogyakarta City had the highest Human Development Index (HDI) in Indonesia in 2021. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded an HDI score of 87.18 for the city.

The HDI score in Yogyakarta City increased by 0.65% compared to 2020, which was 86.61. Yogyakarta City's HDI score was even above the national average of 72.29 last year.

A detailed breakdown shows that the increase in the HDI in Yogyakarta City occurred across all dimensions. The decent living dimension, measured by the average real per capita expenditure per year, increased by 0.65% to Rp 18.8 million in 2021.

In the education dimension, the life expectancy of schooling (LES) for Yogyakarta City residents aged 7 years increased by 0.97% to 17.6 years in 2021. Meanwhile, the average years of schooling for residents aged 25 and over increased by 2.26% to 11.72 years.

The long and healthy life dimension, measured by life expectancy (LE) in Yogyakarta City, was recorded at 74.76 years in 2021. This figure increased by 0.14% compared to 2020, which was 74.65 years.

Besides Yogyakarta City, Banda Aceh City achieved the second-highest HDI score at 85.71. This was followed by South Jakarta City with a score of 84.90, Kendari City with 84.15, and Denpasar City with 84.03.

Sleman Regency was the only regency to be included in the top 10 areas with the highest HDI scores. Sleman Regency recorded an HDI score of 84 last year.
