In 2016, human development achievements at the provincial level varied considerably. DKI Jakarta remained the highest with a Human Development Index (HDI) value of 79.60. This was followed by DI Yogyakarta in second place with an HDI of 78.38, and then East Kalimantan in third place with an HDI of 74.59. West Java was in 10th place with an HDI of 70.05. Overall, nine provinces had HDI values above the national average.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia's HDI in 2016 had entered the high category, having risen above the 70 level from the previous medium category. Indonesia's HDI in 2016 grew by 0.91 percent, from 69.55 in 2015 to 70.18. At the provincial level, four provinces rose from the medium to the high category. These four provinces were Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and West Java.
For information, the HDI is a key indicator for measuring success in efforts to build the quality of human life. The HDI value is measured by how the population can access development results in obtaining income, health, education, and so on.
