Global Peace Index Falls 0.3% in 2022: These Are the Most Peaceful Countries

The international research institute, Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), has released its 2022 Global Peace Index (GPI) report. The report indicates that the average level of global peace declined by 0.3% over the past year.

The report notes that two of the five countries with the most significant declines in peace are Russia and Ukraine, attributed to the ongoing conflict.

The GPI is a composite index measuring the peacefulness of nations. It comprises 23 indicators grouped into three main domains: ongoing conflict, safety and security, and militarization.

Each indicator is weighted on a scale of 1-5. A lower score indicates a more peaceful country.

Iceland is once again ranked as the most peaceful country out of 163 surveyed, a position it has held since 2008. Its GPI score this year is 1.107.

The top 10 most peaceful countries in the world according to the 2022 Global Peace Index (GPI) are:

3. Ireland: 1.288
4. Denmark: 1.296
5. Austria: 1.300
6. Portugal: 1.301
7. Slovenia: 1.316
8. Czech Republic: 1.318
9. Singapore: 1.326
10. Japan: 1.336

Europe is recorded as the most peaceful region globally, with seven of the ten most peaceful countries located there. Indonesia is ranked 47th with a score of 1.8.
