Mount Dukono Erupts Again Today, Ash Reaches 1,900 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at 06:57 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 3 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,900 meters above the peak or 2,987 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters and a duration of 66.93 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on May 19, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 12 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-20 millimeters and durations of 35.28-128.1 seconds.

Then, there was 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 4 millimeters, s-p not observed, and a duration of 26.5 seconds; and 7 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-20 millimeters, s-p 17.11-28.85 seconds, and durations of 73.36-78.21 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 728 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (268 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 21 times.
