Dukono Volcano Erupts Friday Morning, Alert Level Remains at Waspada

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 08.26 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 3 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,500 meters above the peak or 2,587 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 27 millimeters and a duration of 69 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 14, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 98 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5-34 millimeters and durations of 30.44-56.56 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 68 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-34 millimeters, s-p 13.85-59.05 seconds, and durations of 60.49-142.2 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-4 millimeters, predominantly 2 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,089 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (467 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 24 times.
