French football player Kylian Mbappé won the Golden Boot award for scoring the most goals in the 2022 World Cup.
From the group stage to the final, Mbappé scored 8 goals against his opponents. Meanwhile, his biggest rival from Argentina, Lionel Messi, scored 7 goals throughout the tournament.
Mbappé's achievement brought pride to Les Bleus—the nickname for the French national football team. But other countries can also share in the pride, as Mbappé is a descendant of immigrants.
"Star player Kylian Mbappé may have grown up in the suburbs of Paris, but his father Wilfried is from Cameroon, and his mother Fayza Lamari is from Algeria," said FIFA's official media team, Shilarze Saha Roy, in her article titled *From Diagne to Mbappe, How Migrants Have Been Shaping France’s Football*.
Roy revealed that the achievements of the French national football team are inseparable from the contributions of immigrants.
When France first won the World Cup in 1998, their team was strengthened by Zinedine Zidane, who is of Algerian descent. Then, when France won the 2018 World Cup, 15 members of the team were of immigrant descent.
FIFA also notes that the French football team was strengthened by Racid Mekhloufi from Algeria, Marius Tresor from Guadeloupe, Larbi Benbarek from Morocco, Antoine Griezmann of Portuguese descent, and Ousmane Dembélé of Malian descent.
"Although the players' backgrounds are very diverse, this did not prevent coach Didier Deschamps from uniting them all into the national team. The French team is often hailed as a symbol of diversity and unity," said Roy.
According to Insee data, in 2021 France had approximately 7 million immigrant residents, a proportion equivalent to 10.3% of France's total population of 65.6 million.
These immigrants were mostly from Algeria, with a proportion of 12.7% of the total immigrant population of France in 2021. France also received many immigrants from Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia, Italy, Turkey, and Spain, with proportions as shown in the graph.
"Almost half of the immigrants in France (49%) come from these seven countries," said Insee on its official website.
