This Regency Has the Highest Poverty Rate in Yogyakarta

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a 30,730 increase in the number of impoverished residents in Yogyakarta. In March 2021, the number of impoverished residents reached 506,450. The poverty rate also increased to 12.8% in March 2021, up from 12.28% in March 2020.

The number of impoverished residents in Yogyakarta in March 2021 was the highest since September 2015. Meanwhile, the poverty rate was the highest since March 2017.

In March 2021, the poverty rate in rural areas of Yogyakarta was 14.44%, higher than the 12.23% poverty rate in urban areas.

Kulon Progo Regency had the highest poverty rate in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the percentage of residents living below the poverty line in Kulon Progo reached 18.38% in March 2021. This figure is higher than the poverty rate in the other four regencies/cities.

Other regencies/cities with the largest impoverished populations include Gunung Kidul Regency (17.69%), followed by Bantul Regency (14.04%), Sleman Regency (8.64%), and Yogyakarta City (7.69%).
