The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) compiled the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) scores for countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Myanmar had the highest terrorism index score at 7.977 points, indicating the highest impact from terrorism. "In 2022, terrorism in the region recorded 755 attacks and 415 deaths for the second consecutive year," the IEP wrote in its report. However, the IEP noted that Myanmar had seen a decrease in the impact of terrorism over the past year.
The Philippines followed with a score of 6.328 points. IEP stated that while it remained the second most affected country in the region, it recorded its lowest terrorism rate since the GTI's inception. "The country had 20 attacks and 18 deaths in 2022, down 68% and 65% respectively compared to the previous year," the IEP wrote.
Indonesia ranked third with a score of 5.502 points. The IEP explained that Indonesia recorded its lowest number of attacks since 2014, with seven attacks resulting in 25 deaths. Terrorist attacks in Indonesia decreased by 56%, while deaths increased by one compared to the previous year. "Attacks in Indonesia are now the deadliest, with an average of 3.6 deaths per attack, compared to 1.5 deaths per attack in 2021," the IEP wrote.
Malaysia (1.357 points) and Vietnam (0.227 points) ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, and Timor-Leste had no score, or were considered unaffected by terrorism.
The IEP's research calculated the GTI score based on four indicators: the number of incidents, deaths, injuries, and hostages caused by terrorist acts.
The GTI scale ranges from 0 to 10. 0 indicates no impact from terrorism, while 10 represents the highest impact. The GTI analyzes the impact of terrorism in 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the world's population.
