Crime Rates in Indonesia Fall Over the Past Decade

The number of crimes in Indonesia has shown a downward trend over the past decade. Consistently, the interval between criminal incidents has also slowed.

According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2021 there were 239,480 reported criminal incidents across Indonesia. This figure represents a 3.13% decrease from the previous year and a 29.8% reduction compared to 2012.

The national number of criminal incidents has consistently fallen each year since 2017, reaching its lowest level in 2021, as shown in the graph.

This decrease in the number of crimes has resulted in a slower interval between incidents, reaching 131 seconds in 2021. This means that last year, a crime occurred every 2 minutes and 11 seconds.

This is longer than the previous year, where a crime occurred every 127 seconds (2 minutes and 7 seconds). It is also longer than 2012, when a crime occurred every 92 seconds (1 minute and 32 seconds).

With the decrease in the number of crimes, the risk of becoming a victim has also reduced to 90 per 100,000 people in 2021. This crime rate is lower than the previous year's 93 per 100,000 people, and significantly lower than the 2012 rate of 146 per 100,000 people.
