Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Evening, Ash Column Reaches 800 Meters Above the Summit

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 4:43 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 800 meters above the peak or 1,887 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on October 11, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 134 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-20 millimeters and durations of 32.56-55.95 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 felt earthquake, scale II MMI, with an amplitude of 34 millimeters, S-P 13.48 seconds, and a duration of 167.64 seconds; and 16 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7-34 millimeters, S-P 11.36-41.87 seconds, and durations of 46.71-97.35 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,412 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted the most (1,821 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 41 times.
