2018 Public Anti-Corruption Behavior Index Decreases

Indonesia's Anti-Corruption Behavior Index (IPAK) in 2018 was lower than the previous year. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that this year's IPAK was at 3.66 on a scale of 0-5, compared to 3.71 the previous year. A higher index indicates a higher level of anti-corruption behavior among the public. Conversely, a lower index indicates a lower level of anti-corruption behavior.

The corruption behavior index from the public perception dimension this year rose to 3.86 from the previous year. Meanwhile, the experience dimension decreased to 3.57 from 3.6 the previous year. According to BPS Head Suhariyanto, corruption is an extraordinary criminal threat, and equipping the public to become strongly anti-corruption is necessary.

Based on data from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), from 2004 to the end of May 2018, 856 state and private officials were implicated in corruption cases. Of this number, 205 were members of the DPR (House of Representatives) and DPRD (Regional Representative Council). Although many officials have been caught by the KPK for committing corruption crimes, it has not deterred state officials. This is evidenced by the continued high number of officials caught red-handed accepting bribes or involved in other corruption cases. Most recently, 41 members of the Malang City DPRD in East Java became suspects in a corruption case.
