Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Reaches 400 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 11:50 WITA (West Indonesia Time). In the past week, Mount Ili Lewotolok had only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 400 meters above the peak, or 1,823 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 6 millimeters and a duration of 28 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 21, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 22 volcanic tremor events with amplitudes of 1.5-4.9 millimeters and durations of 12-30 seconds. There was also 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.4 millimeters, an S-P time of 37 seconds, and a duration of 80 seconds.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, to avoid entering and refrain from any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity. Residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against potential hazards from lava collapses/landslides from the eastern part of Mount Ili Lewotolok's peak/crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 558 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java experienced the most eruptions (291 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 2 times.
