Based on Presidential Regulation No. 2 of 2022, entrepreneurs are individuals who operate, create, and/or develop a business.
This Presidential Regulation categorizes entrepreneurs into two types: "new entrepreneurs" and "established entrepreneurs".
"New entrepreneurs" are business owners working independently, and those assisted by non-permanent/unpaid workers.
"Established entrepreneurs" are business owners assisted by permanent/paid workers.
Based on this definition and data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), as of August 2023, there were approximately 56.5 million entrepreneurs in Indonesia.
Approximately 52 million of them are new entrepreneurs, comprising 32.2 million working independently and 19.8 million assisted by non-permanent/unpaid workers.
Meanwhile, there are approximately 4.5 million established entrepreneurs, those assisted by permanent/paid workers.
Thus, in August 2023, the ratio of new entrepreneurs reached 35.21%, while the ratio of established entrepreneurs was 3.04% of the total national workforce.
When broken down by age group, the majority of Indonesian entrepreneurs are currently classified as senior citizens (elderly), namely those aged 60 and above.
According to BPS data, as of August 2023, there were approximately 5.9 million people aged 60 and above whose employment status was self-employed (new entrepreneurs).
Furthermore, there were 4.7 million elderly individuals working with the assistance of non-permanent/unpaid workers (new entrepreneurs), and 798,000 elderly individuals working with the assistance of permanent/paid workers (established entrepreneurs).
In these three categories of entrepreneurs, the elderly are the most numerous compared to other age groups.
Cumulatively, all elderly individuals with entrepreneur status totaled 11.4 million, equivalent to 20.25% of the total national entrepreneurs in August 2023.
