Top 10 Provinces with the Highest Number of Deaths in the First Half of 2021

East Java recorded the highest number of deaths in the first half of 2021. Based on data from the Ministry of Home Affairs' Population and Civil Registration Agency (Dukcapil), 91,364 deaths were reported in the easternmost province of Java as of June 30, 2021. This figure accounts for 18% of the 507,545 reported deaths across the 34 provinces and is the highest compared to other provinces.

High death tolls were also recorded in other Javanese and Sumatran regions. 88,720 deaths were reported in Central Java in the first six months of the year, 51,368 in West Java, 43,806 in Jakarta, and 17,671 in North Sumatra.

Furthermore, 16,716 deaths were reported in Yogyakarta Special Region, 14,952 in South Sulawesi, 14,347 in Banten, 13,089 in South Kalimantan, and 12,289 in Bali.

Meanwhile, a total of 143,223 deaths were reported across the remaining 24 provinces during the January-June 2021 period.

For information, according to the Ministry of Health's data, the total accumulated deaths due to the Covid-19 virus reached 135,861 as of September 5, 2021. Central Java had the highest number of Covid-19 deaths with 28,964, followed by East Java with 28,679, West Java with 13,804, and Jakarta with 13,804.
