Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted again tonight, with ash reaching 700 meters above the summit.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday (July 9, 2024) at 6:31 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 15 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 700 meters above the peak or 2,284 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 31.8 millimeters and a duration of 225 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 9, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 7 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-7.4 millimeters and durations of 6-9 seconds. Then, there were 3 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-8.1 millimeters, s-p 0.7-1.7 seconds, and durations of 7-9 seconds.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,545 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (681 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 329 times.
