Turkey, the Largest Host of Syrian Refugees

Turkey has become the primary destination for Syrian refugees. The Italy-based Migration Policy Centre has recorded at least 2.7 million Syrian refugees entering the country led by Erdogan. The large number of Syrian refugees in Turkey is due to its geographically close proximity. The Turkish government implemented an open-door policy, meaning it acknowledges the presence of refugees within its borders. President Erdogan even offered refugees the opportunity to obtain Turkish citizenship.

The next country hosting a significant number of Syrian war victims is Lebanon, with approximately 1 million refugees. The influx of Syrian refugees has increased Lebanon's population by 25 percent, considering the country only has a population of 4.4 million. Furthermore, a large number of Syrian refugees are also located in Jordan (638,000) and Europe (631,000).

The large number of Syrian refugees is a consequence of the civil war involving the Syrian government, the Syrian Arab rebel alliance groups, the Syrian Democratic Forces, Salafist jihadist groups, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The war was centered in the city of Aleppo, a stronghold of the Syrian opposition groups.
