The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 1,164 cases of rape in Indonesia throughout 2021. This represents a 12.76% decrease compared to the previous year, which saw 1,336 cases.
Last year, the highest number of rape cases occurred in North Sumatra, reaching 202 cases or 17.35% of the national total. Rape cases in North Sumatra in 2021 also increased by 18.82% compared to the previous year.
The next highest number of rape cases occurred in East Nusa Tenggara (80 cases), followed by South Sulawesi (74 cases), Aceh (70 cases), and Lampung (61 cases).
North Kalimantan was the only province that did not record any rape cases in 2021. The lowest number of rape cases were found in Bangka Belitung Islands (3 cases) and Bali (4 cases).
BPS also recorded 5,905 cases of immoral crimes throughout Indonesia last year, comprising 1,164 rape cases and 4,741 cases of molestation.
