Warning! Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon (Wednesday, June 12, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 4:38 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 15 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 900 meters above the peak (2,484 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 446 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on June 12, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 4 emission quakes with amplitudes of 7.4-14.8 millimeters and durations of 63-224 seconds.

Then, there was 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and a duration of 56 seconds, and 6 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-13.3 millimeters and durations of 9-15 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 4-kilometer radius in the North-Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,042 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (435 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 185 times.
