One in five households in Jakarta were categorized as slum dwellings in 2020.

Decent housing with a good environment free from various disease threats is an essential need for every human being. However, the reality is that many people still live in less-than-ideal environments.

Jakarta is the province with the largest number of slum households in urban areas. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), slum households in the capital's urban areas reached 22.07% in 2020. This means that 1 in 5 households in Jakarta fell into the slum category that year.

The next province with the highest number of slum households in urban areas is East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), reaching 14.18%. This is followed by Bangka Belitung Islands at 12.97%, West Java at 12%, West Sulawesi at 8.63%, and Banten at 8.54%.

Slum households in the six provinces mentioned above are above the national average for urban slum households, which is 8.34%.

Other provinces with the highest number of slum households in urban areas are Papua, at 8.33%; Riau Islands at 7.74%; and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and West Papua at 7.52% and 7.16%, respectively.

The following are the criteria for households categorized as slums:

* The dwelling does not have access to a safe water supply.
* It lacks adequate sanitation.
* The floor area per capita is less than 7.2 square meters, with specific criteria according to roof, floor, and wall types.

If the calculated slum household value from these categories is more than 35%, then the household is classified as a slum household.
