Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Ash Column Reaches 800 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 8:26 PM WITA. This marks the third eruption in the past week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash plume reached approximately 800 meters above the summit (2,384 meters above sea level).

The ash plume was observed to be gray, with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 571 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Alert Level III (Siaga). Observations of seismic activity from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA on September 9, 2024, showed one eruption with an amplitude of 10.3 millimeters and a duration of 682 seconds.

Furthermore, there were two puffing events with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and durations of 283-392 seconds, and four harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.2-3.7 millimeters and durations of 29-338 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists to refrain from any activity within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and within a 4-kilometer radius in the northeast sector and a 5-kilometer radius in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,606 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,454), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki had 625 eruptions.
