The majority of Southeast Asian residents consider the COVID-19 pandemic their main current challenge, according to a survey report by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

The survey indicates that 75.4% of Southeast Asian respondents view the health threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic as the biggest challenge.

Unemployment and economic recession were cited as the biggest challenge by 49.8% of respondents.

Climate change and more intense weather events were mentioned by 37% of respondents, while 35.6% face the threat of rising military tensions, and 34.3% the threat of domestic political instability.

Furthermore, 32.8% of respondents considered the widening socio-economic gap as their biggest current challenge, followed by deteriorating human rights conditions (22.6%), and the threat of terrorism (12.5%).

This survey was conducted in 2021 using a mixed sampling method among 1,677 respondents residing in Southeast Asia. The survey was conducted online (89.9%) and offline (10.1%). The online survey utilized the Computer-Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) method.
