Indonesia's Demographic Bonus: 69% of the Population in the Productive Age Category in June 2022

Indonesia is currently entering a demographic bonus era, where the working-age population significantly outnumbers the non-working-age population.

If the government effectively manages this demographic bonus, it will be a crucial asset in building towards Indonesia's 100th year of independence in 2045. However, mismanagement could backfire and become a burden on the nation.

According to data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Indonesia's population reached 275.36 million in June 2022.

Of this number, 190.83 million (69.3%) are in the productive age group (15-64 years). There are also 84.53 million (30.7%) in the non-productive age group.

This comprises 67.16 million (24.39%) in the non-productive age group (0-14 years) and 17.38 million (6.31%) in the unproductive age group (65 years and older).

With this population composition, the dependency ratio is 44.3%. This figure is obtained by dividing the number of non-productive age population by the number of productive age population.

A dependency ratio of 44.3% means that every 100 people of working age support approximately 44-45 non-working-age individuals.
