148 Million Javanese Were Muslim in June 2022

The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs recorded a population of 154.34 million in six provinces on the island of Java in June 2022.

Of this number, 148.19 million (96.02%) of Java's population adheres to the Islamic faith. This means that the majority of the population on the island of Java is Muslim.

West Java recorded the largest Muslim population on the island of Java, reaching 47.34 million. This is followed by East Java with 40.01 million, Central Java with 36.48 million, Banten with 11.52 million, DKI Jakarta with 9.43 million, and the Special Region of Yogyakarta with 3.41 million.

Proportionally, West Java also has the largest Muslim population in Java. The following are the percentages of the Muslim population on the island of Java in June 2022:

2. Central Java: 97.30%
3. East Java: 97.25%
4. Java Island: 96.02%
5. Banten: 94.84%
6. Yogyakarta Special Region: 92.92%
7. DKI Jakarta: 83.84%

Islamic teachings have been present on the island of Java since the 11th century. This is evidenced by the existence of an Islamic tomb belonging to Fatimah binti Maimun in Gresik, East Java, dating back to 1082 AD. Subsequently, the arrival of Muslim traders from Persia and India significantly influenced the development of Islam in Java.
