How Much Violence Against Women Is There?

The number of reported cases of violence against women in Indonesia has shown a rising trend over the past 11 years. According to the Women's Violence Data (CATAHU), in 2019 there were 431,471 reported cases of violence against women. This figure represents a 693% increase compared to 2008, when only 54,425 cases were reported.

This figure, however, only represents the tip of the iceberg. In reality, many more women experience violence but do not report it. On the other hand, the increase in reported cases also indicates a growing willingness among victims to come forward and a growing trust in institutions addressing violence against women.

Data from CATAHU 2020 was collected from the Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Agency (DP3AP2KB), Integrated Service Centers for Women and Child Empowerment (P2TP2A), non-governmental organizations (WCC and NGOs), hospitals, women and child service units (UPPA), and district courts. CATAHU 2020 highlights the alarming prevalence of violence against women, suggesting it has become normalized due to a lack of adequate protection and safety for women.
