Indonesia's Human Development Index is categorized as Medium.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded Indonesia's Human Development Index (HDI) in 2015 as having risen to 69.5. Although this is an improvement on the 2014 figure, the index remains in the medium category. According to BPS, an index value is considered "good" only if it exceeds 70.

Indonesia's current average HDI growth is above 0.8 percent per year. The increase is influenced by the implementation of a new methodology disseminated by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) since 2010.

This new HDI calculation method is considered more accurate and comprehensive because it measures 96 commodities and compares educational quality in a way that is more relevant to current conditions. For example, average years of schooling increased from over 15 years to 25 years, and the indicator shifted from literacy rate to expected years of schooling.

Furthermore, the calculation method has changed from an arithmetic mean to a geometric mean. This difference in formula means that low achievement in one component cannot be offset by higher achievement in other components. This change is intended to provide policymakers with a more accurate picture of the education sector and the changes occurring within it.
