Mount Semeru Erupts on Sunday Afternoon, Status Remains on Alert

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 3:16 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 77 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on February 16, 2025, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIB showed 54 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 58-202 seconds.

Then, there was 1 single rockfall event with an amplitude of 4 mm and a duration of 48 seconds, and 6 emission quakes with amplitudes of 3-7 millimeters and durations of 31-65 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (riverbed) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lahars up to 13 kilometers from the peak.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,298 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 650 eruptions.
