Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Thursday, January 15, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (1/15/2026) at 3:39 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 29 times.

Reporting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption was not visually observed. Mount Semeru's eruption is still ongoing as this report is made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on January 15, 2026, from 06:00-12:00 WIB showed 35 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 15-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 63-131 seconds.

Additionally, there was 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 6 mm and a duration of 92 seconds, and 1 emission earthquake with an amplitude of 8 millimeters and a duration of 40 seconds.

PVMBG urges against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, the public is advised not to conduct activities within 500 meters from the river banks (river boundaries) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for hot clouds and lava flows to extend up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 209 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most with 118 times.
