President Prabowo Subianto will make Portuguese one of the priority foreign languages to be studied in Indonesian schools.

"As proof that we consider Brazil very important, I have made the decision that Portuguese will be one of the priorities in Indonesia's education system," Prabowo said during a meeting with Brazilian President Lula da Silva at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday (23/10/2025).

"I am doing this because we want better bilateral relations with Brazil," he stated.

Prabowo mentioned that currently there are eight foreign languages already included in the national education curriculum: English, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Russian.

"In addition to these languages, Portuguese will be a priority foreign language for us," Prabowo said.

According to the international language research institution Ethnologue, Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

Ethnologue estimates there will be approximately 266.6 million Portuguese speakers in 2025, either as a mother tongue or first language used since birth, or as a second language.

This figure places Portuguese in 8th place globally, while Indonesian is in 10th place.
