TNI's Intervention in Academia, Its Forms According to KontraS

Monitoring by the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) throughout October 2024-September 2025 found 13 instances of intervention in the academic sphere carried out by Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel.

According to KontraS, these interventions were carried out through various actions, ranging from interventions in student discourse spaces to disseminating information about the revised TNI Law to various campuses.

The following are military intervention actions in the academic sphere, according to KontraS monitoring throughout October 2024-September 2025:

• Providing briefings to students: 6 instances
• Intervening in student discussions: 3 instances
• Disseminating information about the TNI Law to campuses: 3 instances
• Requesting data on Papuan students: 1 instance

Regarding interventions in the academic sphere, KontraS cited an example: an intervention in a discourse space organized by the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Udayana University, Bali.

At that time, the discussion took place on March 25, 2025, with the topic of the revised TNI Law, which had been ratified five days prior. However, a TNI personnel suddenly barged into the forum, even though he was not a speaker at the discussion.
