804 Cases of Violence Against Journalists Over the Past Decade: The Trend

According to data from the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Indonesia, there were 804 cases of violence against journalists in Indonesia between 2015 and 2025. As of October 1, 2025, there were 65 new cases recorded.

The forms of violence varied, ranging from physical violence, doxing, threats, reporting bans, to digital violence. 

In terms of trend, the number of acts of violence against journalists over the last decade has tended to fluctuate. The highest record occurred in 2016 with 130 cases.

The latest data as of October 2025 shows 65 cases of violence against this profession. 

Recently, the revocation of the special Palace press card belonging to CNN Indonesia journalist, Diana Valencia, has been widely reported. The revocation was carried out by the Presidential Secretariat's Press, Media, and Information Bureau after Diana asked a question regarding alleged poisoning in the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. 

The question was posed when President Prabowo Subianto arrived from a state visit at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, on Saturday (27/9/2025).

The act of revoking this special Palace press ID drew condemnation from various parties, including AJI and the Press Council, as it was deemed to suppress press freedom. Two days later, on Monday (29/9/2025), the Press Bureau finally returned the identification card.

"The special Palace ID will be returned to the person concerned, witnessed by the Editor-in-Chief, and we will hand it over directly," said Deputy for Protocol, Press, and Media of the Presidential Secretariat, Yusuf Permana, in the Palace complex, Jakarta, as reported by CNN Indonesia, (29/9/2025).
