The Number of Regencies in Indonesia Increased by 153% in the Last 70 Years

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), over the past 70 years, the number of regencies in Indonesia has increased by 252 regencies, or 153%.

This increase is calculated from 1955 to 2025. Historically, in 1955, there were 164 regencies recorded in Indonesia.

By 1965, the number had risen by 39% to 228 regencies. During the New Order era, specifically in 1975, the number of regencies increased by 2% compared to 1965, reaching 233 regencies. Meanwhile, in 1985, the number of regencies rose by 5% from 1975, totaling 246 regencies.

However, the trend in the number of regencies in Indonesia did not always show an increase. In 1995, the number of regencies decreased by 3 compared to 1985, reaching 243 regencies.

During the transition from the New Order to the reform era, the number of regencies in Indonesia surged significantly by 43%, from 243 regencies in 1995 to 349 regencies in 2005.

A decade later, in 2015, the number of regencies again increased by 19% to 416 regencies. This number has remained unchanged until 2025.

During the same period, the number of provinces in Indonesia also increased, from 10 provinces in 1955 to 38 provinces in 2025. The number of cities also grew, from 38 cities in 1955 to 98 cities in 2025.
