The Number of Children Cared for by Orphanages in Central Java Fluctuated from 2015-2024

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of children cared for in orphanages in Central Java province fluctuated between 2015 and 2024.

In 2015, the number of children cared for totaled 51,861. Of this number, 92.03% were cared for in private orphanages, while 7.97% were cared for in government-run orphanages.

In 2016, the number increased. Then, from 2017 to 2018, it decreased. In 2018, there was a significant decrease of 53.05%, to 23,326 children from 49,682 in 2017.

In 2019, the number increased by 48.84% compared to the previous year, reaching 34,718 children. Until 2024, the trend in the number of children in orphanages in Central Java remained fluctuating.

In 2024, the number of children cared for in orphanages in Central Java was 34,628, a 5.77% increase compared to 2023.

Of the 34,628 children, 96.82% were cared for in privately run orphanages, while the remaining 3.18% were cared for in government-run orphanages.

Previously, the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) found more than 2,000 fictitious social welfare institutions (LKS) displaying signs without providing or offering social services.

Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf highlighted the condition of orphanages in Indonesia, which differs from the general perception. He stated that more than 85% of children living in orphanages are not orphans but still have at least one parent.
