Number of Death Penalty Demands or Verdicts in Indonesia, 2019-2024

According to the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR), there has been a trend in the last two years of an increase in the number of cases and defendants charged and/or sentenced to death in Indonesia.

Based on ICJR's research, from October 2019 to October 2020, there were 173 cases and 210 defendants charged and/or sentenced to death in Indonesia.

In 2021 and 2022, both the number of cases and defendants experienced a downward trend. However, in 2023 and 2024, there was an upward trend.

In 2023, the number of cases with death penalty charges and/or sentences was 218, involving 242 defendants. In 2024, this number increased to 303 cases with 340 defendants.

The ICJR explains that this figure represents the total number of new cases discovered when the death penalty charge was read or when the death sentence was handed down at the first instance, appeal, cassation, or judicial review stages throughout 2024.

"Therefore, the number mentioned above refers to the addition of new cases throughout 2024," clarified the ICJR in its Report on the Situation of Death Penalty Policy in Indonesia 2024: A Pseudo-Transition Towards Transformation.
