Indonesia's Number of Villages with Slum Settlements Reduced by 2024

According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the number of villages or sub-districts in Indonesia with slum settlements has decreased over the past decade.

BPS defines slum settlements as settlements lacking access to adequate drinking water, sanitation, adequate housing size, and adequate roof, floor, and wall conditions.

In 2014, slum settlements were found in 4,508 villages. This number increased to 5,654 villages in 2018.

However, by 2024, the number of villages with slum settlements decreased to 3,373.

Cumulatively, from 2014 to 2024, the number of villages with slum settlements has decreased by 25%.

Concurrently, the number of villages without slum settlements has increased, as shown in the graph.

Villages with slum settlements are most prevalent in West Java, Central Java, Banten, South Sulawesi, and East Java provinces.

The following are the 10 provinces with the highest number of villages/sub-districts having slum settlements in Indonesia in 2024:

1. West Java: 641 villages/sub-districts

2. Central Java: 396 villages/sub-districts

3. Banten: 191 villages/sub-districts

4. South Sulawesi: 186 villages/sub-districts

5. East Java: 177 villages/sub-districts

6. North Sumatra: 170 villages/sub-districts

7. South Sumatra: 151 villages/sub-districts

8. Jakarta: 127 villages/sub-districts

9. South Kalimantan: 120 villages/sub-districts

10. West Kalimantan: 113 villages/sub-districts
