Geographic Distribution of the Banjar People in Indonesia

The Banjar people are an ethnic group originating from South Kalimantan. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), approximately 93.43% of Banjar people born in their province of origin remain in the region.

This group encompasses the Banjar, Banjar Kuala, Batang Bunyu, and Pahuluan sub-groups. Based on the 2020 Population Census, the Banjar people are spread across Kalimantan and Sumatra, as well as other regions in Indonesia.

A BPS study indicates that several waves of Banjar migration occurred during the Dutch colonial period due to political factors, monopolies, and economic discrimination.

This prompted Banjar migration to Tanjung Jabung Barat, Jambi; Tembilahan, Riau; and various areas in North Sumatra, such as Langkat, Serdang Bedagai, and Medan.

Conversely, BPS research reveals that the Banjar people actively participated in trade and shipping, both domestically and internationally, including various regions in Malaysia: Johor, Selangor, Perak, Penang Island, and Pahang.
